Chapter 7: Speaking from Experience & Self
Purification

Message of Liar, Honest Person, and Propagandist the same

The irony of the Chart on Page 44 is that the Honest Person is transmitting False information unconsciously but with True intent. The Liar and Propagandist are consciously attempting to Deceive, one directly, the other indirectly, while the Honest Person is consciously attempting to tell the truth, while he is unconsciously spreading lies.

As an example: the US Government spreads the propaganda that they are going to war with Iraq to rid the world of their ‘weapons of mass destruction’. Those Americans who believe this story accumulate evidence to support this viewpoint. They are honestly afraid of Iraq’s ability to attack the USA. They honestly spread their fear and concerns to others. They gather in groups talking and writing about the ‘very real military threat of Iraq’ to our way of life, accumulating anxiety. They honestly work themselves into such a frenzy that they demand military action to protect themselves from their own fear. While the initial Propaganda was consciously deceptive, the spread of the national anxiety was truthfully spread and accumulated honestly, until it reached a critical mass, which demanded war and military occupation.

The point is: just because the Speaker is Honest does not mean that his words are true. While there is a tendency to grant credibility to the message of an Honest Person, in actuality the content of the message of the Liar, Propagandist and Honest Person are the same. The only difference in the message is the Intent - Not the Information.

However the Honest Person will always be able to honestly transmit true information, if he sticks to his own experience - while no one can be sure of the truth of the information if he is passing on transmitted information

Thus the Honest person can only be trusted if he sticks to his own experience. If the Person sticks to Direct Experience he is less likely to pass on misinformation. However if our Honest Person attempts to transmit any second hand information then his transmission is suspect merely because of the inherent ambiguity of verbal transmission, if nothing else. This second hand information is the foundation of malicious gossip that is passed on.

Honestly transmitting misinformation from a truthful source

Because of the inherent ambiguity of indirect experience, an Honest Person can even inadvertently transmit the false component of true information. This is one of the implications of the T/F Postulate. If every verbal statement has a true and false component, then the Receiver might pass on either of these components.

The first Honest Person, H1, transmits his experience, Exp, to a second Honest person, H2, the best he can. However because of the inherent ambiguity of words, the T/F Postulate, the second Honest Person, H2, might honestly misinterpret the message. Then even though he has been given truthful information, he might inadvertently transmit the false component of the message. Therefore the only way to insure truth in the message of an Honest Person is if he is speaking from Direct Experience. Any indirect communication is suspect.

Reasons for false transmissions

So why would the Honest Person inadvertently transmit the false side of the honest message?

Primarily, because of his belief filters or level of understanding.

If the understanding of our second Honest Person, H2, is at a lower level, the filter might inadvertently distort the original truth.

Examples:

On a simple level a teacher gives a math lesson to a class. The students get together to work on the homework with someone who wasn’t there. Because they didn’t quite understand the lesson, they inadvertently transmit misinformation.

On a physical level, a dance, Yoga, or Tai Chi instructor gives a lesson to a group of students, who get together after the class to work on the lesson. There are disagreements among the students as to the lesson although they were all there.

On a more sophisticated level, the Physicist’s subtle understanding of motion will be distorted by nearly anyone who has had no exposure to this way of thinking.

On the spiritual plane, the Master transmits, but the Students only receive at the level that they are ready for. If they re-transmit the message, they will distort or change the information depending on their level of understanding.

While part of these distortions has to do with memory, more has to do with levels of understanding.

When the Reader understands the Message better than the Writer

While the Receiver/Reader might have a lower level understanding than the Speaker/Writer/Transmitter, they also might have a higher-level understanding - in which case they might understand the true message better than the Speaker.

Examples

The mother understands that the underlying message of the fussy child is that they need some sleep. The Teacher might understand the question of the student even though they can’t formulate a very clear question. The Master understands that much anger is based upon holding onto the illusory notion of the Person, while those that are angry verbally tend to want to blame some external source.

While the Source might say many things, the Master will hear the Unspoken Message, i.e., ‘I am in Pain’ - ‘I am afraid.’ - ‘I’m confused.’ The good Listener will hear the Literal message only, while those with a lower level of understanding will hear a distorted message.

Self Purification to avoid problems & facilitate transformation

While many of us think we are pure - We aren’t.

Indeed we, each of us, hear thru a filter - which organizes ideas according to our own experience.

The Honest Person transmits a Fat Truth. The Master hears the Lean Truth, even though the Honest Person might not intend it. The Good Listener will only hear the Fat Truth, while the Person with a Lower level of understanding might misinterpret emotions, words or intent - because of their personal filters - only hearing the false component. For instance, if the word ’chicken’ evokes an emotional response, the rest of the communication could be clouded.

Because of the ambiguity of communication due to the level of understanding it behooves us to purify our own belief system so that our personal misconceptions don’t distort the message. Further if we purify ourselves enough, then we might hear the underlying message, which even the Speaker might not have been aware of. Misunderstanding can easily lead to confusion and problems. Just hearing the literal message, means that the Listener will only be able to relay the misconceptions of the Speaker, while if the lean truth is understood, the Listener might be able to raise the consciousness of the Speaker, facilitating transformation, or at least will be able to avoid misunderstanding.

Fat truths need to be reduced of their false component for the good of all. As long as our internal belief filters aren’t purified of our Person, they will continue to distort the Message - i.e. the transmission of the Speaker.
